Agree whole heartedly.

The majority of those who fought (on all sides) in WW1 and WW2, imho, were doing, what they perceived to be, their duty and it is my belief that very few actually wanted to go to war.

When I see the graves of soldiers from those conflicts, no matter which side they were on, and I see their ages (so many under 20), I feel huge sympathy for what they endured and sacrificed.

To me the poppy represents exactly what Martyn said, "sympathy for the fallen" and with respect to the British troops, a great appreciation for their ultimate sacrifice on our behalf.
