Mike,
Crikey, where to start! If you do decide to drive to Greenwhich and park there are so many things in that area that I don't think you will have time to go over to London proper.
If you do wish to do that may I suggest you use the Docklands Light Railway (DLR). This will give you a good veiw of the Canary Wharf area and will let you get to The Tower of London where you can also go to St Katherines Dock or, if you go at the weekend, give you an opportunity to walk around the City where it is very quiet as all the offices are closed.
This area contains some wonderful things to see such as Leadenhall Market, The Museum of London, The Guild Hall plus all the famous buildings such as Tower 42, The Gerkin, Heron, Lloyds etc etc.
If time allows, a trip on the Clipper Boats which run up and down the river or City Boats for a more formal trip will allow you to see London from a good view point. The East End from St Katherines down through Wapping, Limehouse and into the Isle of Dogs is a great walk with some of the oldest pubs in the country.
The most famous is probably The Prospct of Whitby but you also have The Grapes, The Capt.Kid and many more.
I wish you the best of luck as with the best will in the world, you will only see a tiny part of what london can show you.
