It's time to SORN one of my three wheelers. In the past I've had to do this every year, but the advice now seems to be that I don't have to renew annually.
Is this correct?

Don't know! My friend got a fine a couple of years ago as he had failed to notify the DVLA that his was still SORN.

According to Gov.UK, you don't need to renew unless you tax it again and then take it off roed.

My understanding is the vehicle has to be either taxed or SORN'd, once SORN'd this stays in place until you re-tax the vehicle again.

If it's earlier than 1984 then it's zero tax anyway so no need to SORN

A zero tax vehicle still has to be taxed, se even if zero tax I would suggest you still need to SORN.

If it isn't already SORN, then you need to ping it as such with the DVLA or the 'puter will issue an automatic fine If you think it's already SORN, just check here with the reg to make sure https://www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-tax

Thanks CooperMan, very clear. I tax my car annually and SORN it when the weather gets nasty. It used to be a more financially proficient way as 6 months costs more and you don't know when you want to take it of the road, ie. indian summer etc. probably need to look at it again as I really don't use the car enough and 6 months would probably cover my needs now.
P.S. My mate probably got a fine because he forgot to SORN it when the tax expired...... He does have his head up his ..... in the clouds most of the time! Not surprising that he couldn't get why he was fined then!

If you can keep SORN on a vehicle, why cant you keep zero tax on a vehicle. They might say that you could scrap the car and it still be registered if you did that - but so what?
