I still have to get over to the Continent to try some of those passes. There was a possibility of next year, but
wants to do lots of things in the garden, so next year will be the odd day trip out, but no overnights anywhere...

Hire a gardener, then get the ferry to Santander. From there you can either: turn right and explore the Picos, or; turn left and go to the Pyrennes.
You can then use the line to
of "We won't have to drive too far, the mountains are close to where you get off the ferry"
But be warned and don't make the mistake I made with the lovely Lady Budster
Picture the scene!
Middle of the night, ferry somewhere off the Brittany coast, rather rough. The LLB had got up to use the bathroom and was bouncing off the walls of the cabin, as the ship rolled.
Me "It's alright darling, just lie down on your bunk and you won't feel the movement of the ship, as much"
