No. You don't (or rather I didn't) need to remove the steering wheel. Is fiddle but doable. You may need a shorter than normal screw driver.
If you have two storks (one each side) then the screws from one clamp on to the other stork. If not there is a bracket in place of the second stork that passes around the steering column.
Here for a photo where you can see the screw holes an the likely offending connector.
If you undo the wiring loom connector (just pull) you could try and "short" the green and white wire with the green or brown connector in the loom side of the connector. With the ignition on the right indicator should work if its the switch.
Richard is right some of the arms need a bent. Mine isn't though! Read the watch point at the bottom of the above link.
Always use a puller to remove a steering wheel. The splines can be damaged if not.
