Sorry, I was so excited at losing my whistle I didn't think to take any pics.
I was going to use draught excluder, but the only thing I could find in the garage was a length of foam type pipe lagging and some double sided tape. I cut along the length of the pipe wrap about 5mm from the split then just stuck it inside the chrome surround (which I'd removed). Being careful not to let it go too near the rim where it would show.
I must check if the pipe wrap is closed cell foam or it will hold water ....
