Could it be that the previous ore (max apologies if you owned from new!) had the car remapped? Would think this would make the check engine light a far more likely occurrence...
Maybe it's a case of reverting to the original factory map of its been tinkered with?

I bought the car from new so I wouldn't have thought that it was tempered with except by MMC. And I haven't consulted with any BMW performance shop - well, at least not yet - which makes the mapping all-original.
I think that MMC just shoves the manufacturer's original spec/mapping into the Aeros (from the 8's right through to the Coupes) and hadn't bothered fine-tuning anything! So it's left to us owners to pick up the pieces.
