That was the school of thought that I was from until I actually tried them for myself. A car tire on a motorcycle behaves entirely different than what you see in your (or mine) mind's eye. I periodically loan Wings to experienced rider friends to go on trips. I purposely don't tell them there is a car tire on it until after the fact for that very reason and to get an unbiased opinion. Of the setup I run, you are more likely to wear out the front tire (m/c rear tire) in the mountains & twisties due to it's soft compound rubber on the sides.
This guy runs a car tire and is notorious at Deal's Gap (Tail of the Dragon...318 turns in an 11 miles section of road). He doesn't have the acceleration exiting the corners or grunt in the straight sections of the road but he carries more speed through the corners than the majority of the crotch rockets that frequent that road...and a Wing is prone to scrubbing the ground in hard cornering.

If the MotoGP riders had to ride their bikes 1,000 miles one way to get to the race and use the same tire in the race, they might be using them. And if you do get a puncture, they work even better at getting you off the road and to a place where you can deal with it at your convenience. A tire pressure monitoring system is mandatory to prevent you from riding around on a flat (it happens)and not knowing it. If the M3W doesn't have a Run-Flat in the rear, it sure needs one considering its easy access. As a side note, my chopper project has spoked wheels and it runs tubeless tires (nipple area sealed off).
