My 2003 - 4/4 has a 1.8 Zetec and the only two issues I have had with it in 33,000 miles are needing to replace the fan relay (I now carry a spare) and the dash control module (that started to fault at 12,000 miles resulting in faulty warning lights and insrument readings)
The fan only comes in when the engine gets hot (usually in traffic) despite the car having reduced louvres.
I do ensure that I keep the radiator matrix clear of dead flies and muck and I don't have a mesh radiator grille.
