Fit Osram Silverstars or Night Breaker H4 Halogens, should look a lot more Blue/white...
Graham,
can that be done as a straight swap without upgrading to a separate relay?
Assuming you already have a conversion to H4 bulbs, for example, Wipac Quad Optics, Lucas something or other or Cibie H180 (best headlamp reflectors around at present) then the power consumed by either of the Osram lamps is the same as your present bulbs (usually 60/55W main/dip). If you still have the sealed beam units (as my old '76 had before I changed them, and my 90 still does) then the power used by these is less.
Had I kept my '76 I would have fitted extra relays to take the load away from the column switch, which will eventually succumb to the amount of current it passes.
Which reminds me, I must write up the electrical mod for circa 70's cars to make things a little safer in the electrickery dept. Had I done it earlier it would have saved some escape of magic smoke on last year's Highland trek.
Cheers,
