Richard, one of the things that used to work to bleed brakes which were proving difficult was to compress the pistons in the cylinders to reduce the amount of volume, this combined with clamping the flexible hoses would sometimes worked on vehicles with 1/4" bore pipes such as old 48-53 Land Rovers.
