Ultimately I think what is needed is a compact (LED) modular assembly where the lamp can be re-mounted in a number of pre-determined positions.
Whether anybody likes the look of the current solution is, in a way irrelevant. The rules are rules and the architecture of the car challenges those rules.
The modular approach could help with both the practical needs and potentially the aesthetics.
As far as styling go's...the lamp unit needs either to have a more 'classic' aesthetic and/or be camouflaged into a 'thing' that doesn't particularly look like a lamp....integrate it into the filler cap, for example, or the boss for the spare wheel...a strap guide on the luggage rack....that sort of thing..
