Back around '75 myself and 3 school pals hired a small cabin cruiser from Gloucester. Severn, Worcester & Birmingham, part of the Grand Union, north around Brum and back down to Stourbridge and along the Severn.
All in two weeks. There are a lot more canal sections open now, as I have discovered since joining the IWA. Have been a member of the Cotswold Canals Trust for a number of years (and now in the Company of Proprietors of the Stroudwater, or something like that will have to dig out the certificate), plus a year with Hereford & Gloucester. Don't own a boat, though I wouldn't mind a small dayboat cruiser, except for the expense (money goes into Mog & LR), however, almost next best thing - occasionally training to be a TugMaster with Cotswold Canals Trust...
Not quite the same as my Merchant Navy days!
