Sanef tag worked perfectly for me, every time, roof up or down. Mounted centrally above the mirror, inside the heated screen. Worked in situ, even in pouring rain. But if it failed for some reason, it's easy enough to slide the tag out of its mount and hold out of the window (or above the screen, hood off). We never needed to.
