Many thanks for advice. The knob/button has not come off but popped off the end of the handbrake shaft. However, from your replies it should just slide back down the shaft if I can centralise it (which difficult at 0030 am after a good dinner). Ruut, thanks your sentiments but I bought new because I had hoped to have had more than 5 days before initiation into real Morgan ownership. Reality now prevails.
