A postscipt on this.

It turned out to be the printed circuit board that sits behind the centre of the dash.

Ultimately the section burned out completely and the handbrake light, battery light, and the cabin ventilation fan all ceased to work. Fortunately Borghi had one in stock despite the fact that failure of this component is very rare. Probably some small component had failed and with overheating had melted and shorted out a section of the board.
