Hmm. The NHS which budgets around £8k per family per year ( compare that with average family income and taxes) is not so much underfunded as inefficient with low productivity. That was the conclusion of the audit commission who pointed out that the large majority of the extra money put in during NuLabour had gone on higher salaries for NMS staff whilst produvtivity had fallen.
Anyway, leaving that one aside, I did the first bit of a maths degree at the OU a couple of years ago - something to try and keep the brain working. We did some mathematical model;ing including one of the UK population demographic. Things like retirement age, age of entry into the work force, age at death etc. And it showed quite clearly what common sense would have suggested, that moving from a total life of 70 years and a working life of 50 years in the 50s to a total life approaching 90 years and a working life of 40 years now doesnt work without an expanding working population ie immigration. In the final analysis and on average, what you produce in your working life has got to support you for the whole of your life. We used to work for 50 years to support us for 70 years, now we work 40 years to support us for 90 years.
The figures are made even worse right now because UK productivity ( the gdp per hour worked) is actually falling. So we are making less when we are working than we did last year.
Euthenasia would help but you know that its never going to happen. As for saving 3k pa in a private pension, you have to be joking. We have no alternative but to increase the workforce by immigration or to work far longer with a stable work force.
