The rabbit's running with George at Powerlite as I've sent some photos of the old unit. As it appears to have been built in 1989 it is probably due a change!
As for earthing I got a 3.5m length of nice thick cable to earth the battery to the same point as the engine earth - a Northampton Motorsport recommendation when I got the engine remapped.
