I remember when the national lottery was being debated in the House of Lords, Jock Bruce-Gardyne rose to say "Surely my Lords, this proposed National Lottery is just a tax on people who are bad at maths".
He was spot on (of course) but I confess that I do buy a ticket every now and again - worth it just for the pleasure of daydreaming about what I'd do with all the cash if I were to win.
