Hi
I had similar problems & the intermittent nature of your problem points to one of 2 possibilities.
The first is the Ignition module located on the inner wing next to the coil or on some earlier models its mounted on the distributor , as these modules start to fail they become very sensitive to temperature so that sometimes after just a minute they will work again sometimes it may take hours, when you get a new one you get a small packet of heat transfer compound spread this evenly over the back of rhe module prior to fitting or it wont last very long & they are pretty cheap as well.
The second most likely culprit is the Immobiliser Spider Module ( located behind the dash to the right of the steering column screwed to the ash frame) this a little black box measuring about 2" x 3" and fitted to a multi pin plug , they have a reputation of poor build quality & suffer from dry soldered joints.
Remove from the car & at the the plug end you will see 2 slots . Using a table knife or similar insert into the slot & prise the box apart if you examine the back of the PCB you will see all the soldered joints holding the PCB Components in place, check the joints & tracks for signs of heat or any discoloration which indicates a dry joint(s)- using a solder sucker simply remove the old solder from the offending joint(s) and re solder ( it may be worth doing the lot while you have the unit in bits )
If the unit is beyond repair then you have an issue as they are no longer made so this gives you 2 options . Landrover now supply a different complete immobiliser unit ( keys , fobs the lot ) i think its around £300 plus fitting or they also supply a bypass plug which replaces the spider unit and costs around £6 - £10 - its a Landrover part ( havent got the number at hand ) & this is the cheapest option but you have to consider the Insurance issues.
I hope this helps
Cheers
