Rather go gliding than powered flying. A glider is designed to stay up without powered assistance which is more than can be said for a powered aircraft, particularly non-fixed wing.
One guy who took me up flew from an Aston Down near Cirencester, over the Salisbury Plain, past Portsmouth, circled over the Isle of Wight, up to Leicester, across to Telford and back to Aston Down in a day. That's some trip with no engine.
