Yesterday I took delivery of my 43 year old 4/4 from Lifes in Southport. I spent 90 mins with them going over the car, chatting to other owners and learning how to fit the hood and tonneau. Morgan dealers are as different from other dealers as Morgan's are from other cars. A great experience.
On my way home I learned my first invaluable lesson of Morgan ownership. When the fuel gauge shows Full, in might not be, and when it shows quarter full it's close to empty. We ran out on the M40 and spent 4 increasingly cold hours onn the verge, behind a barrier waiting for assistance. By the time it came the driver wasn't interested in looking at the car (it was pitch dark by then) so the car was winched into the back and we were driven the rest of the way home. 5 litres of fuel in the tank a couple (or three) turns on the starter, a cough, a splutter and all is well with the world again. Off to Sainsburys to fill up, and could only squeeze 44 litres in - I had read that the 4/4 had a 55 litre tank. Back home I read in the owners manual that it has a 10 gallon (44 litre) tank. The only question now is what mpg (or l/100km) will I get? A few careful readings over the next few weeks should provide an accurate answer for my car, so that I know how far I can go between fills. For now, I'll err on the side of caution.
Spending this evening going through the paperwork I got with the car. It seems to have only done c. 1000 miles per annum for the last 6 years. My aim is to increase that over the coming months.
