I read about of one wonderous example where a load of high end graphic design workstations were stolen from a designers home office when on holiday.

The security system activated HD cameras in all the devices, plus IR cameras hidden and also sound recording when the room was entered. All data was sent to a remote server.

On his return the "victim" went to the Police, initially the usual lack of interest and suggestion to log the issue for his insurance, until the Police Officer watched the video. He recognised 2 of the three people, a colleague completed the identity. They were arrested, denied everything but once their lawyer had seen the video they pleased guilty...

So yes, video works..
