Yes, you describe exactly the problem I had on my 2002 4/4 (same shoe). I purchased a set of Green Stuff Pads from EBC (EBC6380) a year ago. I even swapped over the adjuster arm etc. and still struggled to get them to fit and basically gave up as the old ones had load of pad left. I keep meaning to send them back but a bit late now!!
If anyone recognises the reason they don't fit and whether they are any good for you then please PM me..
