Reading this thread made me think on another step. I have just ordered a pre paid Visa card for Euros. Look on moneysupermarket.com for the best providers. No transaction fees and reasonable rates. Should give me the best of both worlds.
....and as preloaded if lost etc. it can only be used for so much. Modern version of travelers cheques.
