The swivel pivots are designed specifically for the type of hood you have. They fit at (indeed replace) the pivot point of the hood frames, and work by moving the point at which the frames pivot so that the whole hood is under less tension and can be erected more easily. Then when you turn the lever, it snaps into a tighter position, tensioning the hood. Conversely, when removing the hood, flip the lever over to de-tension the hood, and the fasteners are no longer pulled tight and can be release easily. One of the web sites has a little animation of them working and if you see it in action it is even more obvious how it works.
