The right hand side was perfect but on the left the sidescreen was too close to the pillar and trapped the rubber. That is the actual reason i removed it. Later I loosened off all the screws and exerted considerable force to push the sidescreen back as far as possible, then re-tightened the screws. I probably only gained a millimetre but it was enough. I also had to slightly adjust the bend in the sidescreen mounting support strips.

By the way I fitted the new rubber on top of the old strip which brought the outer edge of the rubber in line with the outer surface of the windscreen pillar. I trimmed away some of the old rubber at the bottom of the pillar and also trimmed a little of the inside angle of the new rubber at the bottom to bring it in flush at the outer surface, and finally trimmed the bottom where it protruded.
