The contact to Michael was managed by a common friend, Michael and myself didn't know each other. TBH we could not test the real intention and benefit of his preamp, because all of my records are produced after RIAA became binding standard. But we could listen to the overall sound of his preamp in comparison to my phono input gear. His solid state pre sounds very rhythmical, has very good timing and a deep dry bass. After a while of listening adaption it began to sound even better. (He brought two samples so we could listen stereo).
My gear is based on an EAR MC step up transformer feeded into a tube Mcintosh C22. This sound is not so defined at the bass, has a less correct timing and tends to "overhang" a little bit at fast fading or suddenly stopping notes. On the other hand, the mix of coils and tubes offers a pretty lively, very dynamic and transparent sound. A little more an euphemism than an intellectual presentation. I like it.
TBH my hifi neurosis has been cured since a decade and normally I don't care about "gear" any longer, just enjoy listening to the music. Anyway it was a very interesting afternoon.
