I have a Michell Gyro Deck and decent amps (Lounge Audio and Rogue) and speakers (Kef) which presents the music as a proper soundstage. I find you can really tell what has been well recorded and the band are inside my room in 3D so to speak.
For a great deal of music of course, what you're actually listening to is what the engineers have decided to create as a 'soundstage'. The days in which musicians actually played together as an ensemble to record are long, long gone, they haven't done that since the 1960s.
