If it's dry rot it goes powdery and will be dryer to the touch - this is caused by a fungal infection eating away and is a bit more serious as the fungus spreads
That's why you insert boron rods or paste into affected timber. It's actually Disodium Octaborate Tetrahydrate, and slowly dissolves and permeates through the wood, killing existing rot and preventing new rot from forming.
