Your steering may be capable of improvement without immediate recourse to a power steering conversion.
The OEM steering box is a Cam Gears unit, check it has oil in it and that it is correctly adjusted with sufficient 'play' in the straight ahead position.
Have the tracking checked, it does make a difference and it will give the tyre place a good laugh when you quote the toe in fractions of an inch.
Fit Mulfab roller bearings under the main springs, it will lighten the steering effort.
If you have a steering wheel with smaller diameter than OEM or wider tyres, think again.
AND, different makes of tyre will impart totally different feelings in the steering.
All easily do-able, if you can get hold of a Gemmer steering box and brackets - do so.
