Regarding the cable lubrication, is hot melted grease not a better bet to pour into the cable (with great care of course) - I used to lubricate my motor bike chains using a bath of same for better infusion (was going to say 'penetration', but it sounds wrong somehow).
I suppose there is a risk that the grease may solidify before it runs down the cable as far as oil would.
