I ran extra springs on my Spitfire 1500 (required for racing, not that I raced it) because I could never get the throttle shaft between the two carbs to fully return on both carbs simultaneously - no matter how careful the alignment. May have been weak standard springs, but I think it was just age (the car's

).
Didn't notice any problem with throttle being too heavy, but the additional springs were not particularly strong.
The failing throttle cable was on MT DAve - from the sound of it he might have other protential problems coming if none of the garages lubed that cable - what else did they not do?
