Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions, frustration got the better of me in the end, and as I also have an annoying fuel leak whilst the car is left standing still I took it down to Williams Morgan last night. Initial diagnosis is that it's the dash control module, the same I suspect as was your problem Titus. There's been no suggestion its repairable and although they are waiting for the part,am already sure it's going to take a few large scotches to deal with the bill! Am thinking there's a bit of an engineering design fault with this component though...as a simple short in an indicator should not be sufficient to cause this much damage(this is the 2nd time I've had one of these modules fail,last time all indicators were out but it was at least still under warranty!
