Down far enough. No end-play in the crank.

Polished the machining tracks out of the Centa "basket" with a Scotchbrite wheel. Chucked it up in a lathe...all appears to run true and is balanced already.


Cush-drive behind the compensator was still in good shape...not that it matters now.


Opened up the compensator "container"...and it let out a stench that stunk up my whole shop. Six hours later, it still smells like burnt sulphur mixed with burnt wiring harness. It was completely full of grease and no sign of any escaping the container. If grease had been the answer, I wouldn't have had the compensator banging.



Wasn't impressed at all with the compensator. Maybe adequate for a lighter bike but appears to be entirely too much play in the unloaded position for a heavier vehicle. The "ramps" of the compensator appear to be "burnished" and not a good finish anymore for mating parts. From the unloaded position, the ramps seem too gradual going from unloaded to loaded. The ramps or scallops of the mating parts are different from one side to the other adding to slack in the unloaded position. I can see why it sounded like someone in the bell housing with a big hammer when the engine wasn't under load. Based on findings so far and the more I look at the Centa, the more I like it.
On the bright side, the clutch plate still looks new, no scorching of the pressure plate and the slave cylinder is still dry. Admittedly, the clutch got cycled in and out more in this application than a "normal" vehicle trying to offset the issues with the compensator but slipping wasn't part of that process. At low speeds, the clutch was disengaged more than it was engaged to keep the hammering of the compensator at bay. The decent condition of the clutch components is only to be expected on such a low mileage vehicle but I guess I've been conditioned to only expect the worst as it pertains to the M3W.
I've cleaned components, chased old tapped holes to remove existing thread lock, chased all new tapped holes just to confirm. Will remove stator in the morning to replace the seal for new Centa diameter, do a little work in the press and should start back together with it shortly there after. My biggest concern was the thought of having to order more parts from Morgan leaving parts scattered all over my shop for months on end but it appears I have dodged that bullet along with its extended waiting times.
