However I do use the iPad with the lens in the lower corner position, so perhaps that's where the problem lies.
Yes, that's it: iPhone or iPad is the same, the lens in the lower position is interpreted as 'upside down'. Macs interpret the extended metadata so the picture is rendered the right way up, but other apps don't, so it appears inverted.
