I expect that there will be a long battle over liabilities before autonomous cars are introduced. I'm not sure that we'll see them universally accepted in our lifetimes.
I agree -I just can't see it working in Britain
Too many liability issues and protestors/disenfranchised people will just make a habit of walking out deliberately to stop traffic
The only reason people don't do it now is through fear of being run over
