On the S1 you do it from underneath after removing the underside panel which, if it's never been off before is a pain. If exhaust manifold needs to come off, is the S4 different?

No you don't....
On the S1, you drop the steering column out the way, swear a bit, and wiggle the starter out through the side of the engine bay....
