No you don't....
On the S1, you drop the steering column out the way, swear a bit, and wiggle the starter out through the side of the engine bay....

Simon, i am curious, when you suggest drop the Column, can you just loosen the Column from the rack and move it to one side, or is it necessary to remove the column from its anchor point inside the cock pit too !!
