On my way to be Santa at Kedleston today, whilst driving the Mog up a hill I hit a patch of black ice. The back end came round , I managed to get it back but then started fishtailing and then I was on the magic roundabout - a 360 ish pirhouette and then I was a passenger headed for the hedge!
Luckily it was a narrow country road with only me on it.So I dropped down into a shallow ditch and buried the front end in the hedge. Lucklily the engine kept going and I was able to reverse it out and carry on my way. Everything seems alright mechanically - but I have her booked into the local garage tomorrow to get steering, tracking & suspension etc. checked to make sure she is safe to drive. There is a dent in the cowl, 2 on the chrome surround of the nearside headlight (will probably need a replacement)and the front wing has a dent & been pushed back at the top of the wheel arch. The nice man from Dentmaster is coming over next week to see if he can fix some or all of it. Paint scuffs I can do myself if they won`t polish out.
I was a bit shaken but otherwise fine. The major dent is to my pride with 20+years since my last (minor) accident and never had a skid where I lost control before.
My fault as I underestimated the traction on the surface and I was lucky to be around to learn from the experience. Colleagues told me when I arrived that the road at that point is dangerous - but I said that the road is never dangerous - it is the driver i.e. me that is dangerous by not being as aware as I should have been.
Take heed on those lovely sunny days where there is a frost - it may look lovely but a mistake can bite you in the bum.
Have a great Christmas and drive safely.
