lucky escape indeed. Black ice is like a laxative. as Ray said, you become a passenger waiting for the crunch.
A diesel spillage, especially on damp roads is nearly as bad...I had an experience 4 years ago on the Mogs at Windermere trip. It prompted a couple of us to fit rollbars for some protection.
It still amazes me to see drivers going at normal and fast speeds when all the clues are there to say slow down. Frost, snow, grit, water, etc.. I think that they assume a modern car will keep them safe or deal with skids for them.
