or what I did on New Year's eve. I decided to replace the gaiters I'd made some years back for the front rebound springs. On their removal, I discovered that the off-side rebound spring had broken and the two sections had screwed themselves together resulting in a solid tube, half the length of the normal near-side rebound spring. Ah ha, I thought, that's why the front end was acting peculier and looking a bit lopsided... As luck would have it, the spring had broken almost exactly in the middle, so armed with an angle grinder to smooth off the broken ends, and after an hour or so consulting the subject on GoMog and Morganatica, I refitted the two half-length springs (in place of the originals) together with new gaiters made, as previously, from cut-down mountain bike frame protectors - total job time : 5 hours. So what's the result ? - The front front suspension is certainly more compliant, though it does seem to roll a little more when gunning it through hair-pin bends. - The steering (Gemmer steering box and damper blades) is lighter (making it easier to gun it through etc. etc). This would appear to be logical as the stub-axles are no longer clamped hard between two stiff springs. - There is quite a noticable reduction in bump-steer, with the car requiring far less steering adjustments it keep it a straight line ; again I think this may be due to the previous clamping effect and the fact that there is now less rotational effect of the combined springs when compressed. - Speed humps are no longer quite the stress inducing crash/bang/wallop. - As expected, the front-end ride height is increased, by a cm or two, but that is not really a problem. So, there you go, all in all a pleasant surprise which, as indicated on the afore-mentionned web-sites, has, at least for Scruffymog, made a considerable improvement. I'll try and post some photos of the springs - hope it works. In the meantime, all the best to all TMers for 2017, Cheers Chris
