There is a much cheaper option than buying two homes. Buy one in the place where you see yourself spending the most time and rent a holiday home for the other times. The money you would spend on buying and the upkeep buys you a lot of holidays and you get to be in different locations too.

You also turn up and don't spend the first few days fixing everything and cleaning up!


Roger, all sensible and all true.

BUT...

- Rent is dead money. It won't appreciate - it's just gone
- If you have investible capital, where else to put it?
- There's an emotional comfort in places you truly own.
- In life the best experiences are often on a whim. Why not drive to the holiday home after the party, just for the thrill of waking up somewhere else. No planning, no booking - just drive




All depends on how much you use the section no home. Paying utilities, council tax, repairs are also dead money and can buy a lot of rent in a year. We have friends who have a holiday home in France. They've owned it many years now and it is intended when they retire they will spend most of their time there. However, there are so many trips made to do work/maintenance on it that I do wonder how much of a holiday home it is!
