The function of the damperblades has already been explained. You can however get rid of the them by replacing them with the roller barings as mounted on the new Morgans here in The Netherlands only around 50 euros) or buy a pair of roller barings from Mulberry (
http://www.mulfab.co.uk/). They come with new springs as the existing ones are too long. The steering will be lighter (you really have to get used to it) but it will definitly gives you a smoother ride.
