I asked about it because the question had come up here. I only have experience of a steering damper on my Ford Anglia in 1970. Anglia's were prone to severe wobble, and I happened on a damper when I bought a scrapper for £22 to dismantle. It was basically a short telescopic shocker which bolted to the inner wing and attached to the steering linkage with U bolts. It made no difference to the weighting but eliminated the wobble completely.
The one pictured above is fancier - looks like a bike pump, but does the job well I'm told. It needs one hole drilling in the cross frame close to where the hand is in the second photo.
