Hi Ive just taken our plus 4 1958 gearbox out and wondered if anyone had advice on curing the following symptoms

Engine running in neutral gearbox noise
Clutch in then no noise
Car running in gear and if engine put under strain a noise like frying onions either going up hill or accelerating any idea what this may be ?
Front shaft bearings with the 'bearing outrigger had steel swarf from somewhere didn't appear to be in the main gearbox
(bearing outrigger is aluminium bearings feel ok)

My best guess, with the available information, is that the "lay shaft bearings" are knackered. Be careful how You take the lay shaft out or You will have bearings and springs all over your shop.
