Dave, Well that sums up Rolex's. They make so many of them that they border on common, rather like Porsche. You have to admire the quality but not the ubiquity.
That seems to me to be a very fair comparison. As these high end marks increase volume, they lose the cachet of exclusivity, and many of their customers buy them for just that exclusivity. "If anyone can be a member of this ckub then it isnt worth joining"
There was nothing driving wise that my Ferrari could do that an equivalent Porsche could not or even, god forbid, a Merc SLS or BMW M3. But Ferrari has the name and that allows them to charge double the price the others can manage. However, they are in real danger of going down the Rolex slippery slope.
