Ooh - that explains it - heater fan is what I am after. Which implies no relay for the heater. And the switch takes a feed from the heater fuse - that fits with the wiring loom description.
Which means that it all failing on the dash module fuse failing is far less logical and will be a pain to find. Ah well at least the knowledge is building!
