Well spotted Craig. I'd be inclined to put a Butt Connector in there and tie wrap the cable so it doesn't chafe again. https://www.maplin.co.uk/p/maplin-insulated-crimp-terminal-butt-splice-blue-jh80bThere is a tool for these but if you are careful you can crimp them with pliers if you are unfamiliar with them do a trial first maybe. I would think the Blue one is probably the size to chose from the pack. If you have a local agricultural supplies shop most stock these or any auto supplies store.
