Blimey Howard, where have you been hiding ? In 2001 the Labour government promoted the use of diesel cars and introduced a new road tax structure that effectively penalised petrol and favoured diesel.

The result was a massive increase in the number of diesel cars on the road

Unsurprisingly they were more interested in political headlines than real science and the results have got us where we are today.


I was certainly around in 2001 when they introduced tax changes based on CO2 emissions. It was aimed at reducing global warming - hence the CO2 link . So what sort of tax savings might a diesel car buyer make? £20? Maybe £40? You dont make a car buying decision based on that sort of money .



Howard it wasn't just the reduction of tax for diesels it was the increase of tax on petrol engines as well. If you really think it was about global warming I guess you also believe there are fairies at the bottom of your garden laugh2
